Athletics Program

Bellarmine fields 36 teams in 13 different sports. Four of those sports—cross country, wrestling, swimming, and track and field—(nine teams) are “no cut,” open to any student who is willing to commit his time and energy to the requirements of the team. In the fall, Bellarmine fields teams in cross country, football and water polo. Winter sports include basketball, soccer, and wrestling. Spring is our busiest season, with students competing in baseball, golf, lacrosse, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.

More than 1000 student-athletes represent Bellarmine as members of one or more athletic teams. Combined with an exceptional coaching staff and elite facilities, Bellarmine has maintained a rich history of success in all sports at the league, section, and state level. Bellarmine’s Varsity teams have amassed a total of 274 WCAL Team Titles historically. That number leads the WCAL and more than doubles the next school on the list.

Conference Affiliations

Bellarmine is a member of the West Catholic Athletic League (WCAL) which was founded in 1967 as a venue for schools which share a common mission to engage in athletic competition. In addition to sharing these common values, the league is also widely regarded as one of the most competitive in California.

The WCAL consists of eleven schools, nine of which compete in boys’ sports. Schools in the boys’ division of the WCAL also include Archbishop Mitty, Archbishop Riordan, Junipero Serra, Sacred Heart Cathedral, Saint Francis, Saint Ignatius, Valley Christian and Sacred Heart Preparatory (in aquatics only). As a member of the WCAL, Bellarmine pledges not to use undue influence in attracting student-athletes to our school. The WCAL's complete policy can be found on their website under WCAL Constitution, Article XII.

The WCAL is a member of the Central Coast Section (CCS). The CCS consists of 12 different athletic leagues and roughly 140 high schools spanning the entire Bay Area and beyond, from San Francisco to Monterey.

In turn, the CCS is a member of the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), which governs interscholastic athletics. CIF’s ideal of “Pursuing Victory with Honor,” provides the opportunity to influence the actions of the athletic community, strengthening the integrity of students and adults across the state by promoting the concepts of sportsmanship, honesty, and quality academics.
