Sports Medicine

Mission Statement

Our mission is to ensure the optimal health and performance of the Bellarmine student-athlete. We strive to provide the injured athlete with the most up-to-date medical techniques in sports medicine backed by evidence-based results. This is done through the practice of athletic training, which includes the prevention, diagnosis, intervention of emergency, acute and chronic medical conditions involving functional limitations.

Our Program

The Bellarmine Sports Medicine department is responsible for the administration of health care for the student-athletes of Bellarmine College Preparatory. Bellarmine employs two full-time and one part-time Certified Athletic Trainers to ensure that our student-athletes receive the highest quality of medical care within the sports medicine world.

Certified Athletic Trainers are highly-qualified, multi-skilled, allied healthcare professionals and have been part of the American Medical Association's Health Professions Career for more than a decade. Additionally, the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine are all strong clinical and academic supporters of Certified Athletic Trainers.

Bellarmine's program is recognized by the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) as a 1st Team Safe Sports School, having met all recommended and required safety standard elements set forth by the organization.

Services Provided

The athletic training staff, working directly under the supervision of the Team Physician, provides comprehensive medical services for 13 athletic programs (35 teams total) and over 1000 student-athletes.

In the case of injury, our athletic trainers provide the student-athlete with a comprehensive examination of his injury. Based on his/her assessment, the athletic trainer will determine the functional limitations that have resulted from the injury or illness. Effective communication with other health care professionals is essential and referrals will be made when appropriate. Finally, a treatment plan based on the findings from the examination is provided to the athlete to assist in the recovery of the injury and athletic limitations. Further communication to the athlete’s family and other healthcare providers is shared, while respecting the privacy of the athlete.

Training Room Facilities

The athletic training room is located on campus among the athletic facilities. It provides a state-of-art facility for our student-athletes.

The training room is equipped with multiple treatment tables, taping stations, cardio-vascular equipment, and strength-training equipment. The facility provides student-athletes with adequate space for therapeutic exercises using physiotherapy balls, theraban and balance devices, each of which are designed to improve functional movement patterns. In addition, two whirlpools are available for the athletes to use for injury prevention and recovery.
