Political Science
HSDA (High School Democrats of America)

Mission Statement: The Bellarmine High School Democrats aim to build students who are political and civic leaders and create change for the better in their communities through hands-on work and leadership while conducting themselves as servant leaders who use politics and civics to be men for and with others.
Club Description: Local chapters do most of the work for HSDA in terms of advocacy, organizing, mobilization, and engagement in politics and civics. Our commitment is to work to make our community better on the local, state, and national level. In the process, we hope to create student leaders who are committed to using politics and civics to be servant leaders who are men for and with others. The focus of our club is to take on opportunities, lead initiatives, conduct events, and guide students to use opportunities. These opportunities could ideally center around advocating, organizing, mobilizing, educating, and engaging. Our club aims to advocate, organize, mobilize, educate, and engage on a variety of issues, mainly centered around the issues that our members feel are affecting the community around them the most. We also hope to focus on issues that are prevalent around us. For example, we know that Bellarmine's justice summit theme for next year is gender justice, so gender justice could be a key issue for us, especially in the second half of the year. During meetings, we hope to come up with ideas for events, go over and guide students in pursuing and connecting with opportunities, and get involved in and develop opportunities as a team. For example, some events that we might get involved in are working with and interviewing politicians or pushing for policies that address social justice issues. In meetings, we will go over the events that we are conducting as a chapter. As a club, we want to have all members leading initiatives and opportunities by doing whatever they feel comfortable with and whatever they want to lead. Thus, we hope to have our chapter work in sub-teams for specific events and opportunities. We hope to use meetings as a way to catch up on progress with opportunities made on events and initiatives that we are doing as a chapter specifically. We also hope to use club meetings as a way to present external or other opportunities that are available to them. Our chapter and the sub-teams that our chapter has could get involved with these opportunities to various extents and in various ways, but we hope to be able to share opportunities that would be valuable in allowing students to continue to become political and civic leaders and perhaps even combine politics and civics with other areas, like journalism. Our chapter also hopes to use club meetings to identify new ideas and opportunities that we can get involved in. For example, HSDA has numerous different sub-groups and initiatives. For example, they have caucuses that focus on resolving issues related to a specific group in the United States. They also have task forces, which focus on specific issues and policies that are affecting America. We hope to use club meetings as a way to identify and unify ourselves on what we want to do for our chapter and what we want to get involved in, as well as what our priorities are and will be. That being said, we do want our club members to have some level of independence within our chapter, and we do want them to lead opportunities and initiatives that they think would benefit the chapter through things like sub-teams or by partially doing things on their own and partially involving our chapter. In terms of the community that we hope to foster, we hope to foster a community both inside our chapter and in the Bellarmine community in general that is a community where everyone can grow easily and freely. Leadership is a large part of our club, and we want people to lead in areas they feel comfortable with and become political and civic leaders in a way that is unique to them. We also want to foster a community where people are able to fulfill their missions and goals and develop themselves personally. We hope to allow students to use politics and civics as a way to become servant leaders, and as a way to use their experience at Bellarmine to become better people committed to serving others and developing themselves.

Mission Statement: Our mission is to educate Bellarmine students and its community about global issues, diplomacy, and international relations by simulating United Nations conferences; and foster skills in research, public speaking, and negotiation.
Club Description: The fundamental goal of Model UN is to give Bellarmine students a unique and formative experience in international relations -- we do this through two primary methods. First, and most prominently, we prepare club members for Model UN conferences, teaching them about how Model UN works procedurally, helping them develop public speaking skills, and highlighting key foreign policy issues that they can tackle. In addition, we give them direct exposure to the field of international relations and political science through our partnership with the High School Foreign Service Organization, which provides free resources relating to foreign policy education for high school students nationwide. This includes calling in guest speakers, including former Bellarmine alums and United States Ambassadors, to share their stories with our members. If YOU want to be able to meet incredibly important foreign service officers, improve your public speaking skills, make new friends, and attend incredibly fun competitions, JOIN BELLARMINE MODEL UN!
