Cross Country Starts Season Strong

Colin Peattie '21 at Lowell

Bellarmine's cross country team opened the season on Saturday at the Lowell Invitational in impressive fashion, placing first in the Varsity, Junior-Varsity, and Sophomore races, and 2nd in the Freshman race.

Colin Peattie '21 led the way for the Bells, finishing the 2.78 mile course in a blistering 13:52.6, outpacing a strong opponent from Clovis North by more than 12 seconds.  The two were side-by-side going into the last hill, but the Clovis runner was unable to keep pace with Peattie's impressive kick. The Bells won the section 1 of the Varsity Boys race with 35 points, 15 points better than Clovis North in a 35 team field.  Nolan Topper '21 took 5th place in 14:28, followed by Clem Welsh '21 in 14:34, Galen Topper '21 in 14:34, and Casper Aliaga '21 in 14:47.  Aiden Theocheung '21 was 6th for the Bells, and Christian Yarwood '21 7th.

Because the field is so large at Lowell, divisions are split in two, and the Bells fielded two varsity teams.  In the other section, the Bell squad took 5th, with Holden Duflock '20 leading the way for the Bells in 17th place.  Section 1 of the JV race was dominated by the Bells, with an impressive score of 19, more than 40 points better than 2nd place West Torrance.  Jack Boennighausen was the top Bell runner, finishing in 2nd place.  He was closely followed by Zack Koverman (5th), Joseph Sarmenta (6th), Dylan Papenfuss (7th), Lukas Snycerski (8th), Matthew Nazari (9th), and Tanay Menezes (10th).

Bellarmine also beat Clovis North in the Sophomore race, 51 to 73.  Jack Glanville was Bellarmine's top runner in 4th place, with Sebastian Penner close behind in 6th.  In the first race for the Freshman squad, the Bells were narrowly edged out by Granada, 83 to 90.  Jorge Sosa finished 3rd in the field of almost 250, with Jack Frida the next Bell to finish in 13th.

Next week, all four squads will be in competition once again at the Ed Sias Invitational.
