Bellarmine Speech & Debate Coach Honored

Aaron L

The Bellarmine College Preparatory Speech and Debate program continues to receive nationwide attention, most recently with the recognition of coach Aaron Langerman by the National Speech & Debate Association.

Langerman, a 2011 Bellarmine alumnus who has been coaching the school’s forensics team since 2015, was recognized for his exemplary volunteerism to promote speech and debate. He also serves on the California Coast District Committee, which manages local community speech and debate activities.

As noted by the National Speech & Debate Association, Langerman “goes above and beyond in service to the speech and debate community at large.”  Among his District Committee responsibilities are expanding access to speech and debate by recruiting new programs; providing ongoing mentorship for first time coaches; organizing and hosting local tournaments; communicating with local coaches about upcoming events and rules; and coordinating recognition opportunities for students and coaches across the district.

“I am appreciative of the National Speech and Debate Association for recognizing educators around the country who help promote an activity that allows students to become confident in their voices and their ideas,” said Langerman.  “Moreover, I am grateful for all the opportunities at Bellarmine to work with such motivated, talented, and team-oriented members of our Speech and Debate team. My colleagues and fellow coaches – Dr. DeeDee Sullivan, Matt DeLateur, Vern Cleary, Ani Prabhu, and Xavier Liu – are all inspirations. I am excited about continuing to serve our district and grow BCP’s program for many years to come.”

The association also noted that this spring, Langerman has “been tapped to help make difficult decisions about tournament operations for the safety and well-being of students” during the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent health and government restrictions.

“I greatly appreciate all that Aaron is doing to support our students as they adjust to speech and debate tournaments online,” said Kristina Lusher, Bellarmine principal. “His dedication to the program to ensure that it continues to grow and thrive has been incredible.”

This is the second time in less than two months that a Bellarmine speech and debate coach has been recognized by the National Speech & Debate Association. In March, coach Matt DeLateur was the recipient of the association’s Donus D. Roberts Coaching Excellence Award.
