We here at Bellarmine Athletics hope this update regarding sports for the academic year 2020-21 finds you and those close to you safe and healthy.
Several statements have come out this past week that directly affect Bellarmine Athletic Programs. The first is the CIF and CCS proposed 2020-21 calendar. The second a directive from the Santa Clara Public Health Department.
The first is a bit more exciting and hopeful, so we will start with that. The CIF announced that in fact they will be supporting return to athletic competition in January of 2021 if it is safe to do so. The Calendar for the CIF can be found by clicking here.
More pertinent to Bellarmine is the calendar released by the Central Coast Section (CCS), which is the West Catholic Athletic League’s direct governing body. CCS announced it will begin return to athletic play, pending pandemic conditions, on December 15, 2020 in what they are referring to as season 1. Season 1 will include Cross County, Football, Volleyball, and Water Polo for Bellarmine Athletes. Season 2 includes the remaining sports programs with various start dates between February 22, 2021 and March 15, 2021. A detailed calendar can be found by clicking here. The WCAL Principals and Athletic Directors will be meeting over the next several weeks to discuss the announcements and logistics of finalizing a safe return to play and league schedule. All return to play is predicated on national, state, and local health conditions and directives at the proposed time of year.
The second announcement was a directive by the Santa Clara Public Health Department. After five weeks of rolling out a conditioning program with some of our athletic teams, Bellarmine needed to shut down all in-person athletic activity. Per the directives of July 17, 2020 from the Santa Clara Public Health Department stating:
Consistent with the guidance of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), schools may not open for any in-person instruction, athletic or extracurricular activities, or other related functions, including hybrid learning models at this time.
Once Santa Clara County has been off of the State’s monitoring list for 14 days, schools should resume in-person instruction and activities consistent with the prior requirements issued by the Public Health Department. For entire directive, please click here.
Bellarmine Athletics is committed to the overall well-being of our athletes, coaches, staff, and the community at large. With that at the forefront of our decision-making process, suspended activity will be reviewed on August 13, 2020, with no in-person campus activity starting prior to August 17, 2020, and only if determined to be safe. While we are aware that our return to campus hinges on being off the county data monitoring list for a minimum of 14 days, that will not be our only criteria for returning student athletes to campus. We understand the fluidity of the times can be difficult, and hope that by giving you a clear statement of no on-campus activity prior to August 17, 2020 gives your family something definitive and allows for some family planning.
Lastly, the Athletic Department will update our Bellarmine community of any league decisions as soon as we are able to.
