Speech & Debate Team Takes Second Consecutive State Championship

Speech and Debate State Champs 2023

After three intense days of competition, Bellarmine College Prep’s Speech and Debate team won the State championship for the second consecutive year. The Championship Tournament took place April 21-23 at Carlsbad High School.

“We brought one of our largest teams ever, with 54 students competing this weekend to defend our title as state champs,” noted Aaron Langerman ‘11, coach. “This was a state championship won not by high flying individual champions …. Instead, it was a state championship won by the breadth of our team. We had more people make it to elimination rounds and earn sweepstakes points than any other school, and that momentum carried us in the overall sweepstakes awards.”

The total tallies for sweepstakes are as follows:

  • Bellarmine College Prep – 130 points, 1st place State Champions
  • James Logan High School – 107 points, 2nd place
  • Archbishop Mitty – 103 points, 3rd place

Congratulations to all the participating students, and coaches Aaron Langerman ‘11, DeeDee Sullivan, Matt DeLateur ‘12, Vern Cleary, Xavier Liu ’17, Tyler Vergho ’19, Adarsh Hiremath ’21, and Nathan Kang ’22.
