The evening of January 18 at SAP Center in San Jose, the Bellarmine Ice Hockey team defeated Leigh High School 11-0 at the 5th Annual Stephen Caban Memorial Hockey Game.
“While our attendance was limited due to COVID-19 protocols, it was great to see the players donning the Columbia blue jerseys and honoring Stephen Caban before the game,” noted Michael Serrania, Bellarmine’s director of club sports and the hockey moderator. “Special thanks to Sonya Arriola for her remarks, our coaching staff, and GM Mike Yost. All of this would not be possible without the willingness of the coaches and moderators, past and present, to make this an annual event that shows how much our Bell hockey family loves and honors Stephen and his family.”
The annual game is played in memory of Stephen Caban ‘15, who passed away in December 2016. He had a passion for ice hockey, was a member of the JVA Bellarmine Ice Hockey team and received numerous awards on the team that earned a championship in spring 2014.
The event helps raise funds for pediatric cancer research at Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford. “While I did not personally know Stephen, my coaches speak very highly of him and remember how great of a teammate he was,” noted team captain Liam Mason ’22 who explained that Stephen had spent much time at the end of his young life undergoing cancer treatment and care at Packard Children’s Hospital. “Both the game and the fundraiser have become part of Bellarmine Ice Hockey tradition,” he added while encouraging contributions to the effort.
