  • YES, AND… The Philosophy of Improv (For Teachers!)

Dates and Time: June 27-29 1pm-3pm
Location: On campus at Bellarmine College Preparatory
    Who: 6th -12th grade educators
    Cost: $200

Listening and responding quickly are important skills for teachers to develop. In this workshop, we will explore the benefits of the YES, AND philosophy of improvisation in relation to how we lead our classrooms. Imagine if our students felt empowered enough to contribute to class discussions without the fear of making a mistake: “To me YES, AND means don’t be afraid to contribute. It’s your responsibility to contribute. Always make sure you’re adding something to the discussion. Your initiations are worthwhile” (Tina Fey). Along the way, we’ll learn some theatre games our students could play as ice-breakers and play some games ourselves. Lessons promote active listening, being present for each other, moderating healthy class discussions, respecting each other’s diversity and diverse opinions, and building camaraderie among students.

    Facilitator: Russ Marcel

Russ has been teaching English & Drama, directing plays & musicals, and moderating two improv groups at Bellarmine College Prep for the last 18 years. This year, Russ teaches Shakespeare 1 & 2, English Literature AP, British Literature, and Acting 1 & 2.
