Performing Arts

This course is specifically designed to introduce the middle school student to music, movement and drama incorporating percussion techniques, composition, pantomime and improvisation. In addition to exploring basic elements in each area of the Performing Arts, students will also gain skills in communication, public speaking, problem solving, creativity and writing across the curriculum. An emphasis will be placed on confidence building cooperative learning activities. All materials will be provided

Photography

This course is for middle school students who would like to learn the basic elements of photography. The students will learn how to use a simple digital camera and they will learn how to adjust the quality of their pictures that they have taken with a basic computer program. No experience is necessary. The students will need to supply their own basic digital camera.

Beginning Percussion

Students will explore music through the study of percussion instruments and techniques while learning the basic elements of music. Emphasis will be placed on the study of rhythm and rhythmic notation while engaging students in small and large group ensembles. Students will use acquired skills in performance of Symphonic, Afro-Cuban and Afro-Brazilian music while gaining relevant historical and theoretical knowledge. No previous experience necessary, just a great attitude and willingness to apply oneself. Musicians with keyboard or piano background are encouraged to participate and apply their knowledge to various keyboard percussion instruments.

Intermediate/Advanced Percussion

This course is designed for students with previous experience playing percussion instruments. Students will continue to develop individual performance skill and technical ability on a wide variety of western and ethnic percussion instruments. The class will focus on building listening and reading skills, allowing students to apply these skills to a variety of percussion repertoire.

Sculpture

This course is an introduction to the principles and elements of design in three dimensional form. Students will explore multiple techniques using a variety of media including plaster, wood, wire, and paper.
