Visual & Performing Arts Offerings

The below courses satisfy one semester in each of the subject areas. Students that have completed the 9th grade prior to summer school enrollment are eligible to receive 5 units of credit  for each of these classes. A student that has not completed the 9th grade may take the course for enrichment only.

Acting 2

This course is designed to guide the intermediate or advanced actor to a deeper knowledge and experience of drama and performance techniques. Students will continue training in physical movement, stage voice, scene analysis, character development, improvisation, and directing; additionally, students will develop a knowledge and experience in various acting approaches (Stanislavsky’s “System,” the modern “Method,” et al). Each student will be required to read and perform a number of scenes and monologues and maintain a journal including character analyses, research, text analysis, and self-evaluation. The semester will culminate in a showcase production demonstrating all of the skills developed.

Acting Workshop

This course is designed to teach the beginning or intermediate actor the basics of theatrical performance. Students will learn how to develop of a character, analyze a scene, improvise, read a scene with feeling and energy, and identify basic theatre terminology. We will also work on improving the actor’s voice, diction, and movement. Special emphasis is placed on learning improv games and collaborating with other actors on stage. The semester will culminate in a showcase production demonstrating all of the skills developed.

Art 2*

The content of the course involves art theories and style, physical and visual surface, and symbols of communication. Media used will include pen & ink, linoleum block printing, water color painting, 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional design, ceramics, and sand block carving.

Intermediate/Advanced Percussion

Jazz Styles and Improvisation

This is an ensemble course for instrumentalists interested in improving their performance and theory skills in different jazz styles. The class will focus on a variety of musical genres with emphasis on soloing and improvisation.

Photography 2*

This course is a continuation and a deepening of the students understanding of the concepts, elements, principles and techniques introduced in Photography 1 (Film/Digital). This course focuses on photography as a fine art as a creative means of personal self expression.Evaluation will be through group and individual critiques. (No darkroom).

Sculpture

This course is an introduction to the principles and elements of design in three dimensional form. Students will explore multiple techniques using a variety of media including plaster, wood, wire, and paper.

Stagecraft (Afternoon Camp, 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.)

This hands-on camp will offer students the opportunity to use lighting equipment, sound equipment, the rigging and fly system, and work in the scene shop. Students will gain knowledge and an appreciation of what goes on behind the scenes of a theatre. No experience required. Camp limited to 15 students.

*Fulfills the second half of the UC/CSU Visual and Performing Arts Requirement. Bellarmine students have to have taken part 1 of the course before taking part 2 to fulfill the requirement.
