Scheduling

Welcome to the Scheduling page for the 2012-2013 school year. We have included information that we hope will help you navigate the scheduling process at Bellarmine and help you make decisions about your course of study. Please feel free to talk to your counselor or Ms. Carey Byron, the Director of Scheduling, if you have specific concerns about your current schedule or the scheduling process that occurs in the spring for the following year. Bellarmine also has 5 college guidance counselors to help you with scheduling choices as they relate to college admissions. Once the term begins, all schedule changes must be made in person with the Scheduler. Changes may be made for any reason during the drop/add period. If a student is considering dropping a course after the deadline, he must see the Scheduler and his counselor to discuss his options and to pick up the necessary form.

Drop Policy for Honors/AP Courses

Once the term begins, all schedule changes must be made in person with the Scheduler.

Students should drop/add regular level courses in the first two weeks of the term, so as to minimize the impact the change will have on the rest of their schedule.  As long as there is room in the course to be added, the student may drop/add without any entry on his transcript.  After Week 4, a dropped course will appear on his transcript with a “W” grading symbol, indicating withdrawal from the course.  (However, if the student is failing at the time of the withdrawal, a W/F will appear instead.)  Please note that it is possible that the W will have an impact on how a college admissions officer interprets the transcript.

If a student chooses to enroll in an honors/AP course, the student is making a commitment to stay in the course for *at least* the first three full weeks of the term.  In other words, a student may not drop an Honors or AP course from May 1st until after at least trying the class for three weeks.  If the student chooses to drop down to the regular equivalent after that time, he may do so during Week 4, and his grade will travel with him to the new course (with a 10% increase) – but no entry will be made on his transcript.  If he decides after Week 4 to drop, the “W” will appear on his transcript and the grade will still travel as specified above.

If there is no “regular-level equivalent” to which a student may move, students may move prior to Week 4 if they would like to (they must see Ms. Byron in person to make sure the course they’d like to add is feasible, to obtain the necessary drop form, and obtain signatures from counselor, teacher and parent).  The classes in this category are:  Art History AP, Biology AP, Chemistry AP, Computer Science A AP, Environmental Science AP, European History AP, Psychology AP, Spanish 5 AP, US Gov’t & Politics AP.

At the end of Week 4, any student who is failing an honors/AP class will be required to drop the course.

If a student has a D or an F in an Honors/AP course at the semester, he will be dropped from the course and enrolled in the regular level equivalent.

Honors and Advanced Placement Enrollment

If you are interested in taking an Honors/AP course next year, you should consult with your current instructor to solicit their feedback about whether this is a good choice for you.  In addition you should reflect on your study habits, overall course load and interest in the subject matter.  If you still think it is a good idea, then you may request the course during the online course request period.

However, please know that your counselor will review your course requests during your one-on-one scheduling meeting in March or April.  If the counselor determines (based on your grade history, current grade, study habits, overall course load and outside commitments) that the Honors/AP course is not a good idea, he/she will not approve your request, and you will be scheduled into a regular level course.

If you would like to appeal the counselor’s decision, you and your parents will meet with the Academic Assistant Principal, Ms. Kristina Luscher, to appeal the decision.
