Less than one percent of US high school seniors are awarded this status, which is based upon the student's performance in the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

    The only time high school teammates have ever opposed each other in a US Junior Amateur final was in 1962, when Jim Wiechers beat James Sullivan at Lochmoor Golf Club in Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan. Both attended Bellarmine - Wiechers Class of 1962 and Sullivan Class of 1965. This year, a pair of recent Bellarmine graduates – Eddy Lai and Berk Harvey – would like to follow in their footsteps.
