Posted: September 12, 2018

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced that 23 Bellarmine College Preparatory seniors qualified as semifinalists in the 64th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These young men will be considered for more than $31M in National Merit Scholarships to be offered in 2019.

The Bellarmine students announced as National Merit Scholarship semifinalists are: Rishi Balakrishnan, Telvin Ciby, Samuel Clark, Shubhankar Gaur, Kevin Gottlieb, Christopher Hom, Daniel Kim, Gautama Manja, Rishabh Menezes, Kevin Oh, Jason Phong, Ashwin Pillai, Ryan Remmel, Abhishek Rengarajan, Samuel Sommerer, Nihal Talur, Kenneth Tan, Dylon Tjanaka, Austin Tsai, Tyler Vergho, Matthew Wong, Rishab Yeddula, and Lewis Zhang.

The group of approximately 16,000 semifinalists nationwide represent the highest-scoring students from each state, and less than one percent of US high school seniors. Finalists in the competition will be announced in early 2019, with selection based upon academic record, participation in school and community activities, and demonstrated leadership ability, among other criteria. Some 7,500 Merit Scholarships will be awarded to finalists next spring.

The National Merit Scholarship Program, according to the NMSC, “honors individual students who show exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies.”
