Team 254 Victorious at World Championships

Posted: April 27, 2018

Robotics Team 254, The Cheesy Poofs, earned their fourth world championship title at the annual FIRST Championship held April 18-21 in Houston, Texas. With titles in 2011, 2014, 2017 and now 2018, their performance not only ties the world record for most championship titles, but caps the team’s undefeated season with a record of 53-0-0, making them the only team in FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) history to win every single match in a season.

Team 254 also received the Autonomous Award sponsored by Ford, for its unique 4 cube scale autonomous program and scale detection software.

Thirty-six Bellarmine students participated on Team 254 at the Houston tournament. The winning alliance of the competition was comprised of Bellarmine’s Team 254, The Cheesy Poofs; Team 148, Robowranglers, Greenville, Texas; Team 2976, Spartabots, Sammamish, Washington; and Team 3075, Ha-Dream Team, Hod-Ha’Sharon, HaMerkaz, Israel.

More than 15,000 students from nearly 700 robotics teams representing 43 countries competed and exhibited in the four FIRST programs at the tournament, including FIRST LEGO League, FIRST Tech Challenge, and FIRST Robotics Competition.

The 2018 challenge, FIRST POWER UP, positions teams and their robots trapped in an 8-bit video game. Robots place milk crates, representing power cubes, on large balancing scales in order to tip the scales and gain ownership. The alliance with the highest score at the end of the match, which includes autonomous and teleoperated periods, defeats the boss and wins the game.

Team 254 moderator and Bellarmine faculty member Dan Judnick had high praise for the team, “This was a spectacular accomplishment that they all contributed to …. Every single student deserves recognition.”

In addition to Judnick, Bellarmine’s Robotics Team 254 is moderated by faculty members Brad Lindemann, Peng Yav, David Dutton, and Adam Wilson.
