Charles Malaspina reunited with 1954 class ring

I remember the ecstatic feeling of seeing a Bellarmine College Preparatory ring for the first time during junior year. As I shuffled through the student life center, I happened to stumble upon a table where several Bells were gathered. As I made my way into the crowd, I saw them: The class rings. I knew from that moment that I wanted one. Prior to me placing an order, I decided to reach out to my Grandfather, Charles Malaspina ‘54, to see if he still had his, and if would be willing to give it to me so I could wear his ring. He informed me he did purchase a school ring. I was ecstatic that I could wear my Grandpa’s ring. Upon further investigation, however, he told me of his decision long ago to give it to a girlfriend. Then the bad news, he never got it back. Though very amusing, I was rather bothered that he did not have something so symbolic from his time at Bellarmine since he attends the reunion luncheons every year. This prompted me to contact the alumni director, Matthew Zuniga, in search of a 1954 ring to create a replica.

After several contacts with different people, my mom jumped in to help. She was able to reach out to Dick Gilberg, also class of ’54, who was more than willing to help us. He mailed us his ring, we took that ring to Joe Escobar Diamonds in Campbell. They were able to make a near perfect replica. After some time had passed, we picked up the ring and immediately took the completed product to my Grandfather’s home in Redwood City. I will never forget the mesmerized, surprised look he had when I showed him what I had for him. I was thrilled to fill a gap in his Bellarmine experience. This was truly a wonderful project.
