Bells Excel at Model UN Conference

Posted: November 9, 2016

Seven Bells - Matt MacDonald ’17, Ben Ha ’18, Alex Harding Bradley ’19, James MacKinnon ’20, SriRaam Mehtalia ’17 and Luke Harding Bradley ’20 and Akshaj Dwivedula ‘20 - participated in the Monterey Lyceum Model United Nations (UN) Conference held at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies in Monterey on November 5.

Model UN provides the opportunity for students to gain valuable debate, negotiation and public speaking skills while learning about international affairs and global issues.

Each student represented a different country and participated in discussions and negotiations in one of three houses: Security Council, General Assembly or Social-Economic Council. Of the seven participants, only one had previously been involved in Model UN. This introduction was a great learning experience for the team, and despite their inexperience, several students took home awards:

Outstanding Position Paper: Ben Ha, Venezuela
Honorable Mention Position Paper: James MacKinnon, Canada
Outstanding Representation: Alex Harding Bradley, Syria; James MacKinnon, Canada; Akshaj Dwivedula, Switzerland

Additionally, the student-participants from each house voted two students to represent them at the closing ceremony “press conference.” This election resulted in each of the three houses being represented by one Bellarmine student. Those students were SriRaam Mehtalia, Alex Harding Bradley and James MacKinnon.

Special thanks to Samraj Kalkat '17 and Rajiv Singireddy '17, who coached the Bell contingent. With 120 student delegates at this conference, and the lack of experience of the group, it is evident that their efforts were instrumental in the results of the day.
