Volleyball Topples St. Francis for CCS Championship

Posted: May 18, 2016

The Bells took rival St. Francis to five sets in the finals of the Central Coast Section (CCS) championship on Tuesday, May 17, and came out the victor in the Division I matchup.

The two teams went head-to-head several times during the season, with St. Francis taking the lead on wins, but the Bells bounced back to come out on top in the West Catholic Athletic League (WCAL) championship game just last week, resulting in a shared league championship title. That tournament final was a five-set thriller (25-27, 17-25, 25-21, 25-17,15-11) much like the CCS championship (25-23, 16-25, 25-20, 21-25,15-10).

The Bells, seeded third coming into the CCS tournament, beat 11th seed Cupertino, 2nd seed Monta Vista and 1st seed St. Francis on the road to the DI title.

Middle Will Smith who had 14 kills in the final told the Mercury News, "We have just been practicing and pushing and grinding every single day. We didn't let the losses get to us. We play point by point, and we play severy single point like it was a new day. I felt like that is what let us be so successful."
