Bellarmine Holds Successful 25th Annual Winter Warmth Drive

Posted: December 6, 2018

The Bellarmine College Preparatory community collected loads of warm clothing, blankets, sleeping bags, and socks during its 25th Annual Winter Warmth Drive.

The drive occurred November 12-20 and resulted in donations of 700 blankets and throws, 75 sleeping bags, and $2,060 for the purchase of new blankets for HomeFirst’s Cold Weather Shelter program; 2,081 pairs of new socks; 100 hygiene kits; and hundreds of jackets, coats, sweatshirts and other warm clothes for the many individuals and families served by Sacred Heart Community Service.

Among the contributors were several teachers and homeroom moderators who held classroom drives; the Bellarmine Jesuit Community; football, basketball, and cross-country teams; Big Brothers program; Bellarmine Mothers’ Guild and Dads’ Club; AGAPE Club; and For Others Club.

The Winter Warmth Drive was coordinated through the Bellarmine Christian Service Program team, led by Steve Pinkston and Anne Maloney; the AGAPE club; and Bellarmine alumni volunteer Joey Sciammas, alumnus from the class of 2014.

Bellarmine junior Aditya Behal led the efforts of the For Others Club to secure in-kind donations from various local merchants of personal hygiene items, including nail clippers, soap, shaving cream, and razors. These donations, and personal contributions by the students, resulted in the assembly of 100 personal care kits.

Leveraging retail discount pricing on “Cyber Monday,” Bellarmine senior Seamus Shea -- supported by classmates, teachers, and family -- purchased 60 sleeping bags that were donated to provide warmth to those in need.

This undertaking by the school community exemplifies Bellarmine’s motto of being men and women for and with others.
