Team 254 Wins Northern AZ Tournament

Posted: March 16, 2018

Our Robotics Team 254: The Cheesy Poofs won the Arizona North Regional FIRST Robotics Competition, held March 7-10 in the J. Lawrence Walkup Skydome at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff.

Sixty teams from Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Mexico, and Netherlands competed in the tournament.

“Our boys were seen cheering each other on, assisting other teams with their robots, and helping to load-up gear belonging to other teams at the end of the tournament, so that those teams could safely make it to the airport,” said Peng Yav, Physics instructor and Robotics moderator.

A total of 35 Bellarmine students, ranging from freshmen to seniors, traveled to the tournament. The technical team, led by senior Ashwin Adulla, spent countless hours in the lab preparing the robot for competition and making final modifications at the tournament. The pit crew, led by senior Gianluca Zanutta, helped to make continuous mechanical adjustments and ensured the robot was in optimal shape for each match. The drive team, consisting of seniors Justin Ramirez and Themis Hadjiioannou and sophomore Jack Gnibus, worked on strategy, scoring, and maneuvering the robot. The scout team, led by sophomore Aditya Gupta, kept track of the performance of other robots in preparation for alliance selection.

Next for The Cheesy Poofs is the Silicon Valley Regional taking place March 28-31 at the San Jose State University Event Center, followed by the World Championships in Houston April 17-22.

Team 254 participates in the VEX Robotics Competition (VEX) as well as the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC). As a three-time world champion (2011, 2014, 2017), the most decorated team in FIRST, and a member of both the VEX and FRC Hall of Fames, Team 254’s goal is to inspire other robotics teams and our community through STEM outreach in the spirit of FIRST’s Gracious Professionalism.
