Bellarmine Stages “Shrek: The Musical”

Posted: February 1, 2018

Bellarmine College Preparatory is staging one of its most theatrically elaborate productions with “Shrek: The Musical.”

The story of Shrek ties-in well with Bellarmine’s Summit on Human Dignity and this year’s theme of Understanding Race in the 21st Century. As noted by Bellarmine theatrical director Russ Marcel, “The overall theme of the show is that our differences are what make us strong. We need to celebrate our diversity, and not make anyone feel undervalued because of who they are or how they look.”

The family-friendly show, based on the 2001 animated feature film, is among the biggest that Bellarmine’s Department of Visual and Performing Arts has produced, and is quite a collaborative process. The cast is comprised of 30 student performers, including males from Bellarmine and female students from a variety of local schools that include Notre Dame, Presentation, Leigh, Los Gatos, St. Clare, and Mendenhall Middle School.

The production includes prosthetics, puppetry, impressive costumes, enormous set pieces, creative light design, and big dance numbers. The tech crew has worked diligently to create set pieces such as swamp trees, Lord Farquaad’s castle, and Fiona’s tower. Jean Toohey, costumer, is finding and producing the costumes for fairytale creatures that include ogres, witches, and bears.

Bellarmine’s Makerspace has been instrumental in the production, as instructor David Dutton and his students have provided their services for helping with props and costumes. The ingenuity of the students and innovative 3D modeling have created elements including helmets for guards and Shrek’s prosthetics.

“Shrek: The Musical” runs March 2 and 3 at 7:30 p.m.; March 4 at 2 p.m.; and March 7, 8, 9, 10 at 7:30 p.m. All performances are in the Main Stage Theatre of the Sobrato Center for Humanities and the Arts on the Bellarmine campus, 960 West Hedding Street, San Jose. Tickets are $15.00 and available online:
