Bellarmine moms make blankets for fellow Jesuit school impacted by Hurricane Harvey

Members of the Bellarmine College Prep Mothers’ Guild felt the tug at their hearts to do something to help Strake Jesuit College Prep, after learning that many families from the Houston-based fellow Jesuit school were directly impacted by Hurricane Harvey.

Lenore Grant, Christian Service Special Projects chair for the Bellarmine Mothers’ Guild (BMG), contacted members of Strake Jesuit’s Mothers’ Club shortly after the hurricane to ask how the BMG could help. The Mothers’ Club described a tradition of providing “prayer blankets” to families in crisis, and explained that, with over 100 families affected by the floods of the hurricane, they were in need of more blankets.

Grant, along with Heidi Grassman, BMG vice-president for Spirituality, organized the project of solidarity and love, rallying Bellarmine moms to construct approximately 30 blankets, which were made in Strake Jesuit’s signature green and white. Each blanket was adorned with three charms – a horseshoe, a bell and a cross -- representing the two schools and their shared Jesuit tradition. Each knot tied in the construction of the blankets represented prayers sent across the miles, a bond as Jesuit communities, and hope for comfort and solace as families dealt with devastating loss and the process of recovery.

The blankets were blessed by Fr. Mario Prietto, S.J., superior of Bellarmine’s Jesuit Community, before being sent to Houston.
