Math
Introduction
Mathematics as a subject provides a system for creating abstract models of reality. Systematic examination of the structure of these models helps in beginning to understand the relationships present in our world. The design of Bellarmine’s math curriculum focuses on algebra and geometry as these are fundamental prerequisites for advanced mathematics studies. To this end, the faculty of the math department strives to assist every student
- become fluent in the language of algebra and geometry;
- develop competence and confidence in performing algebraic and geometric procedures;
- achieve a lasting understanding of fundamental math concepts.
For students wishing to further their study of math, the department offers elective courses that include study in the areas of calculus, probability, statistics, number theory, and graph theory. Students should consult with their current math teacher and college guidance counselors for assistance in selecting electives that best match future academic and career interests.
Every student must be enrolled in at least one math course during each semester of their freshman, sophomore, and junior years.
General Requirements
Every student must demonstrate sufficient proficiency in Bellarmine’s Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 curriculum to be eligible for graduation and enrollment in math elective courses. Earning a grade of C minus or better in each of these three courses is considered demonstrating sufficient proficiency. At the discretion of the math department, alternative methods of assessing sufficient proficiency may be employed.
Honors and Advanced Placement (AP) Program
The purpose of offering Accelerated/Honors/Advanced Placement courses is to provide students who possess both the academic talent and interest in mathematics an opportunity to be challenged in a way that a regular course would not offer. This challenge stems from teachers stretching the student’s mathematical knowledge by examining topics in greater depth/detail and moving at a faster pace.
Expectations of students enrolled in these courses include exemplary comprehension of the prerequisite mathematics, a commitment to active class participation, a passion for learning, and a dedication to the responsibilities that accompany rigorous academic study. Students are expected to earn a grade of B minus or better at the semester to continue their enrollment in an honors or Advanced Placement course. If a student earns a grade below a B minus at the semester, he must consult with his teacher, parents, and counselor to discuss reasons for and against staying enrolled in the class.
Honors & AP courses are not open enrollment. Students interested in enrolling into an Honors or AP course must submit an application [see current math teacher] and take the appropriate qualifying test.
