Library After-School Hangouts by Salazar_0600.JPG

The mission of the library is to serve the research and reading needs of Bellarmine students and faculty.  Both faculty and students take advantage of the expansive collection of print, electronic and audio-visual media for curricular and personal interests.

The Mathewson Library is a major center of student activity on Bellarmine's campus. Students gather there before and after school, during break, lunch, and free periods. Classes meet in the library to conduct research or use the state-of-the-art audio visual equipment in Andrade Theater or the Library Classroom. The library is a place to read in the soft seating area, study in the individual study carrels, work together at the large tables, or write, design or research using 48 desktop computers. A wireless connection to the Bellarmine network allows laptop use from any point in the Library.

Andrade Theater, the Library Classroom, and the Library Conference Room allow for a versatile learning experience. Andrade Theater has 82 permanent seats and is often used for guest speakers, group and individual student presentations and other activities. The Library Classroom is used to introduce students to research assignments before they begin exploring library print and electronic resources.  To aid in this process, it is equipped with a cart of laptops, sufficient in quantity to accommodate each student of any given class period.

Resources

The Mathewson Library's collection includes approximately 31,000 books and audio-visual materials. More than 900 videos in DVD and VHS format, as well as approximately 40 periodical titles in hard copy, are also available for student use.

All areas of Bellarmine’s curriculum are supported by more than a dozen subscription databases, such as Gale Databases and Virtual Reference Library, ProQuest, Oxford University Press, JSTOR and Facts on File.

E-books are also included in our reference collection, with new acquisitions made yearly. Published by well-known reference booksellers, e-books can be accessed by many students simultaneously.

All of these resources are included in our online catalog which students can access at school as well as at home (with proper authentification).

Curriculum

Information literacy is taught to Bellarmine students throughout their four years of high school - in the classroom as well as in the library. Students learn to distinguish reliable sources from those that are biased, inaccurate or out-of-date. By using Bellarmine's vast print library and growing electronic resources, students are able to access top-notch mateial for all studied disciplines.

Each research assignment is a building block for the next, where students become introduced to:

  • Our online catalog
  • Online databases
  • Reserve shelves
  • The Dewey Decimal System
  • Reference resources
  • Exploring college libraries
  • Using college-level resources
